“I was a coward. Everything I did in my life was for myself. I’d been selfish and conceited and self-centered. I didn’t care about that other woman. I just wanted to get myself out of the situation. I didn’t care about the SEAL, I just wanted out of the jungle. I didn’t care about the other guys on the team, I couldn’t even tell you what they looked like. I was only concerned about myself.”

“I think anyone in your situation would’ve been the same way.”

“Yeah, that’s what everyone told me, but I know it’s a lie.”

“A lie?”

“Uh-huh,” Julie said. “Because I was there. I saw that other woman. She wasn’t like that. Her first concern was for your SEAL. She even worried about me. Your SEAL wasn’t like that. He was willing to give his life up for mine, even though I didn’t deserve it.”

“Julie, I don’t think—”

“No. I’m right. But I’m trying to change. I’m really trying. I know a lot of people see me as stuck up and a rich daddy’s girl. I moved out here with my dad’s money. I wouldn’t have been able to start my business without him, so in a way, I’m still being selfish. But I’m hoping that everything I’m trying to do now to help others will somehow balance out my karma a little.”

Julie swallowed and hurried to finish. “I just want to do what I should’ve done all those months ago. A simple thank you. Tell all of them face-to-face that I appreciate what they did for me and what they do for our country. I won’t take much of their time, and I know they probably don’t want to hear it from me. But, I’d be more appreciative than you’d ever know if you helped me do that.”

Susan Stoker has a heart as big as the state of Texas where she lives but this all-American girl has also spent the last fourteen years living in Missouri, California, Colorado, and Indiana.
