 Lord of Pleasure

Alexander William Baxendale, the earl of Hawksford, used to be a very big man. Quite literally. His girth made him only popular with his friends. Despite his weight, he considered his life to be charmed until he meets Miss Charlotte Jane Sutton. He quickly realizes winning the girl of his dreams isn’t the same as eating chocolate rolls. When she breaks his heart, he decides the best revenge is becoming the man of every woman’s dreams. Unfortunately, he creates a name for himself even he isn’t ready to embrace. Soon, far more than Charlotte is knocking on his door. Will he survive his own revenge? He isn’t so sure.

Excerpt:

He placed his gloved hands on each side of her and lowered his gaze to hers, his chest tightening. Her full lips and that soft scent of lilac water lured him. “I feel like you’re purposefully torturing me.”

Lifting her own gaze to his, she softened her voice. “I don’t mean to.” She hesitated. “I like you. Everything about you is darling. As such…we should call it off.”

He lowered his chin, his hands pressing harder into the wall beside her. “If I’m that darling, why call it off?”

“It wouldn’t be right.”

“So after all that banter, leg shaking and talk of the Clarendon, you decided I’m not rich enough anymore? Maybe I should point out my finances are the same as they were an hour ago.”

Her expression wavered. “You seem very nice. Far too nice for the likes of me. Which is why I’m sparing you. Now if you’ll excuse me—” She tapped at his chest and tried to move around him.

He blocked her in, knowing something wasn’t right. “What the devil is going on?”

She blinked up at him, feigning innocence by enlarging her eyes. “I have a right to change my mind, don’t I?”

“No one changes their mind that fast.” He shifted his jaw and edged in completely, boxing her petite frame against the wall hard by pressing the girth of his body into hers. He purposefully set each of his own large boots against the outside of her small slippered feet, locking her thighs and skirts together with his knees. “My weight alone will hold you to this wall for as long as I’m breathing,” he warned.

Her chest rose and fell more unevenly against his as she searched his face. Her fingers gripped the wall behind her. “Please. Spare me. I…it’s the right thing to do. I spared you, didn’t I?”

“You spared me?” he echoed. “Is that why you looked over at your friend before pulling me over here? Is this some sort of game you two play?”

She stared. “Don’t be ridiculous. For once in my life I’m trying to do the right thing.”

He dug his knees into her. “Try harder. Because I’m not playing with you. What the hell is going on? Do you need me to call over one of your superiors and lay this all out? Is that what you want?”

She winced against him, unable to move. “I…I’m not a likeable person. All right?”

“I’m gathering that much, but you aren’t leaving this corner until you tell me what the hell is going on. Move those lips. Go on.”

She kept her voice low. “If I tell you, will you let me go?”

“It depends on whether I still like you when you’re done.”

She chewed her lip then blurted, “She and I split everything.”

Well. “Given there isn’t really two of me, how do you and she get to everything, Miss Sutton? Expound upon that for me.”

She winced. “I wasn’t planning on going through with it. So you needn’t worry.”

“I’m not the one who is worried.” He strained down closer to her level and purposefully set his nose to her nose. “What were you planning to do? Hm? Tie me up? Rob the fat one of his chocolate rolls?”

She cringed. “Cease insulting yourself already. Fat is a matter of perspective and I don’t think it’s fair you’re angry with me. I’ve done right by you and I’m not saying anymore. You can’t make me.” She pinched her lips to demonstrate her right to silence.

“Allow me to demonstrate how quickly fat can change your perspective.” He casually put more weight against her and the wall.

She squeaked, her eyes widening in panic.

“I’m only putting half my weight on you, dearest,” he chided. “Imagine all fourteen stone. You’ll stop breathing in thirteen seconds.”

She patted his chest frantically with both hands, her chin awkwardly pressed against the midsection of his waistcoat. “This isn’t very nice of you!”

“Oh, I’m sorry. Is your perspective being challenged?” He tsked and eased off by leaning back a touch so she had room to move but not run. “Are you going to tell me what you and your friend are up to? Or do I need to…” He leaned in and whistled.
